We start the tour at a local Indian coffee shop where we enjoy our first dish, roti prata. This is a good time to learn about the Indian influence in Singapore and how the food that they brought over from India has evolved over time. We have around a 20-minute stop here and its nice to get to know the rest of the group.
Take a short stroll down Joo Chiat road, learning about the history of the area, and have a look at one of the area's most famous hawker market centers to see how the future looks for the industry. Its great to see people doing something positive and creating an environment where merchants can earn good money and still provide great value with superb flavors.
Stop off at a Peranakan shop house museum for half an hour to enjoy some local delicacies such as pork, rice dumplings, otah, and famous Nonya kuehs. After you've enjoyed the food and learn more about the Peranakan culture, we walk down East Coast Road and turn into Ceylon road and visit the Hindu temple. The Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Temple is the second oldest Hindu temple in Singapore. Take a walk around while soaking in the hypnotic atmosphere, learning about the religion, and how food plays a part. This is a really popular part of the tour and a great opportunity for some cool photos.
Following your temple visit try the eponymous Katong Laksa. Outside of the normal tourist spot where most people think Laksa was invented, go to the real original shop which is hidden from the main road. We sit and enjoy the Laksa whilst telling the story of the infamous Laksa wars.
After, take a stroll along East Coast road and see an old coffee shop that hasn't changed for generations. Try some local fruit from the fruit stall and visit a famous Bak Kwa shop to watch the pork being grilled to perfection.
The tour ends at a local Nonya home cooking restaurant where we feast on Popiah and Tahu goreng. This restaurant is part of the fabric of the area and has been around for generations. The tour takes about 3 hours and no one leaves hungry.

Great food, very interesting guide, a great way to see Singapore off the beaten track!
One of the best foodie tours we have been on. Kathy our guide was from the area so she could so much history and tidbits about the area, the people, the food. Food was excellent. Would give this tour a 12,and highly recommend
This is a 'must do' tour - and make sure you go hungry as there is so much food to sample you'll be pleased it's a walking tour!! Our tour guide, Kathy, was friendly, very knowledgeable and had a great sense of humour. Having grown up in the area she was full of interesting tidbits which made the tour even more enjoyable. A highlight was the Peranekan house. An easy walk for all age groups.
