It was great. I’m 56 years old and had no problems. The hike up wasn’t bad. The slides and jumps were exciting. The guides were very helpful. They took their time and were very patient with a lady who was having some trouble. Loved it!
I loved this excursion. I didnt like the hike to get to it because im fat and out of shape. But the guides were very friendly and helpful and stopped to rest when needed. Loved the free rum punch as well. I would suggest this excursion especially for people who like outdoor adventure.
This was a unique opportunity to see a beautiful area from a unique position. That said, it is not for the unfit, unstable or fearful. The general consensus of the adults in our group mid-40s to upper 50s is that we were glad we did it but would not do it again. The kids early teens thought it was a blast. Winston was a super guide. Encouraging when we lagged. We were also given two guides from the park, but Winston's english was better. On the way to the park we were picked up just outside the cruise terminal, he told us some of the history and culture of the Dominican Republic. On the way back, he stopped at a fruit stand along the road and bought us each a banana. We all agreed it was THE BEST banana we have ever eaten! Yes, they lose flavor when shipped to the local Walmart. We also were given a small pack of cookies. And there was a cooler of water and soft drinks, as well as a jug of rum punch after the hike. He had some instruments that he passed out and allowed the children to play along with the radio. Great fun! As far as the waterfall excursion: When they say it is a half hour hike uphill - that is no exaggeration. It took us longer, and we were passed up by at least one group. At the beginning, we waded through a stream, so the hike was done in wet shoes. The trail was muddy. We all ended up with minor sores where sand got into the shoes and rubbed. There were a lot of steps as we hiked uphill and not always railings to go with. It was warm and humid. I don't want to discourage you from going - it was no problem for a moderately fit person. The guides did a super job taking us down the waterfalls. One was at the top, assisting and one at the bottom, making sure we landed ok and giving the all clear to the guide on top. They pointed out where to jump. And led those of us around when we were too chicken to jump that would be me. At one point, there was a hole in the stream bed and one guide was right there helping each of us around it. The water was muddy and we couldn't see the bottom, due to so many people. We were a group of about 20 and there were groups before and after us. We were passed up by, I think, 3 groups and we met a group going upstream. There was always an opportunity to go around rather than down the waterfall or slide. In some cases, the way around was nearly as frightening. Sometimes steps, sometimes ladders, always wet and not always with secure railings. I wouldn't call it actually dangerous, but you did need to be cautious. In places where we walked along the stream bed, there were places where the stones were rolling under our feet. When we finished the waterfalls, there was still a 20 minute walk back to the parking lot and bus. There were basic toilet and shower facilities next to the parking lot make sure you use them before you start out!. Also a small shop and snack bar. I write all of the above so that you know what to expect. It would be possible to go on your own to the park and just use the park guides, but I highly recommend going through an outfitter! Too many things could go wrong. We were exhausted when we returned - glad to be dropped off at the port gates.
