Stop At: Floating Gardens of Xochimilco, Southern neighborhood of Xochimilco, Mexico City Mexico
Enjoy one of the main attractions in Mexico city at your own pace, and save time, enjoying your time in this unique site.
A trajinera is a unique water ride, similar to a Venetian gondola, that wades across the canals of Xochimilco while you enjoy music, food, drinks, snacks and have one of the best experiences of your life.
Trajinera presumably comes from the Spanish verb trajinar which means “to carry something from one side to another”; these boats were born thanks to Porfirio Diaz' idea of creating a way to please his guests by offering them a tour across Xochimilco's canals. The first trajineras used to be more simple, with woven roofs and chairs made out of a plant called tule. They were decorated with floral arches with female names on them, such as “María” or “Rosario”.
Nowadays, though the roofs and chairs have modernized, you can still find the female names and flower arches on the decoration of these boats.
