Duration: 3 hours
Included in the price: Warm meal and snacks (at the family farm Odems and the guest house Pr’Bizjak), educational path in the Kokra canyon, countryside legends, tour guidance and insurance.
Own trekking or mountain bike, clothing appropriate to weather conditions and cycling helmets are mandatory.
The starting point of the tour is the main square of Kranj. Our path follows the river Kokra to the village of Predoslje where we are kindly greeted at the Odems tourist farm. This family farm produces milk, eggs, seasonal vegetables and veal, so let’s not miss a snack! We will cycle through meadows and fields, then cross the river Kokra at Visoko and on its left bank, we will go up the educational path of the Kokra canyon to the village Breg ob Kokri. We will pass also the subalpine village of Preddvor and we will be able to get a feeling of its history at the Wurzbach mansion and St. Peter's church, both mentioned already in the 12th century. We will have the opportunity to feel also the healing effect of this place through its geographical features, fresh mountain air and the tranquillity it has. When the last count of this mansion, Dr. Arthur Wurzbach, sold it to doctor Majerič, the latter reorganised it to a resort where the well-to-do guests from Austria, Germany and Yugoslavia could breathe the healing air.
In Zgornja Bela we will arrive at the homely guest house Pr’Bizjak with its aromas of buckwheat gnocchi, mushroom carpaccio, sweetbread and the award-winning fennel cookies. The menu is simple, but the warm and inviting atmosphere has been there for at least 200 years and will make you feel as important as the high-rank politicians that often come to eat at Pr’Bizjak’s. After a warm meal, our path will go on through charming little subalpine villages to the village of Tatinec, which is especially important for our trip. Legend has it that the village got its name after a certain youth, named Tine, who liked to steal from people and so got the nickname “tat Tinc” (“the thief Tinc”). One night he was hauling a stolen cow up the hill together with a friend and because he was too loud doing that, the friend warned him “Tine, tiš” (“Tine, quieter”). So that is where the name of the neighbouring village Tenetiše comes from. We will not visit this village, but in Tatinec you will have the opportunity to hear about who is hiding there.
With a sack full of legends we will come through the green pastures to the three clay lakes of Bobovek. Right here under the Alps, mammoths used to roam 180.000 years ago, as finds from archaeological sites can tell us. The artificial lakes, results of clay digging, are an excellent opportunity to freshen up in the summer and to relax at their green banks in the spring and autumn. After this break we will cycle back to Kranj and enter into town past its most beautiful natural attraction – the Kokra canyon.
