I was really looking forward to visiting the Duomo and it didn't disappoint - BUT be aware that the climb to the top is not for the feint-hearted. In fact I would go on to say that if you suffer from claustrophobia, have a heart condition, or have any leg or knee related problems, then DO NOT attempt this climb. There are more than 420 steps in total and at times you are in very cramped spaces, which on a hot day, as it was for me, then the air gets very stifling. However, let's not dwell on the gloomy side. The sheer scale of this building is absolutely staggering. You traverse a height of such magnitude that the view from within down to the cathedral floor and from the outside across the city, once you've reached the summit are just breath taking.
450 or so steps upward. Ricardo did a nice job breaking up the climb to let the less athletic catch a breath. It is a breath-taking view of Florence...well worth the money. Having Ricardo explain the the history was very, very good. One suggestion: ask your guide how to navigate getting back down on your own...can be confusing that you're going the same way back for half the trip, and then a separate way for the last half, to come out on the south side.
Tour guide Ivanka amazing - lots and lots of stairs and tight fit in places but well worth it for the view.
During the summer months it is highly recommended to pay the extra cost to get a reserved skip the line ticket and/or tour of the top attractions in Florence including the walk to the top of the Duomo dome, the Uffizi museum and the Accademia museum. This tour got us into a dramatically reduced line (less than 10 minute wait) and to the stairs up to the top of the dome for the incredible view with plenty of information from our guide on a headset. It did not include a tour of the cathedral itself which was a separate entry. The guide and tour company were excellent.
This was a interesting tour because we got to climb up to the top of the Duomo and look out at the beautiful city of Florence. We were also able to stop and two level on the way up and appreciate the art painted on the inside of the dome. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and explained the art very well. She also was very friendly and did a good job making sure all the tour attendees were tolerating the climb. Highly recommend.
Our tour guide was very informative and friendly. It certainly was a workout walking up all the steps, especially in the heat, but the views of the painting on the inside of the dome were great, as was the views of Florence from the top of the dome. What does need improving is description of the meeting point. It would be better if they said meet by the fast lane entry rather than the address given as 'Maps' took us to another point. Also the personal ear speakers to hear the tour guide were not very good and we missed some of the explanations.
You have to meet at the side entrance. Once we found our guide, everything went smooth. Mobile app passes work so no need to print them. We received headsets so we could hear the guide and they worked very good. Our guide was very knowledgeable and professional. We were able to spend as much time as we wanted on top of the duomo, which was nice.
I am 75 Yrs old and surprisingly did the climb well just needed to stop for a breather along the way. It was worth it not only for the views but for seeing how the dome was constructed. I did not find the guide helpful. He just strode on ahead and did not check on the group at all. I was surprised at that.
The guide for this tour was excellent, the best we've had of the three guided tours in Italy. However, the time was changed on us and we were not notified, which caused a lot of confusion and consternation.
Ricardo is excellent and the Duomo is wonderful. Unfortunately the electronic equipment he uses is sorely lacking. If you take the tour. Stay within 15 -20 feet of Ricardo and take your own headphones. Otherwise kiss your time and money good-bye.Also--- the name of the tour is a total misnomer. You do not skip the line. But get in line behind everyone else already in line. This is a Join The Line Tour. Plan to spend a minimum of at least 20 minutes in line----- there is no skipping the line.
Great walk to the top of the Duome. Wear good shoes, easy climb but avoid if heights are a issue. Wonderful views of the city. Skip the Line tour - highly recommend. Tour Company contacted us day before to confirm and give final instructions and where to meet. A MUST DO tour.
We miss understood that this tour was all about steps, one way, no turn around and either climb or cancel. We thought we were going to spend a lot of time on the floor looking up but it was more about looking down. In our mid 70's not sure we could do it. Our group was encouraging and we had several rest stops but we made it to the top and outstanding views of Florence- WOW! Of course we had to come back down as many steps and did not get to go on the main floor which was a disappointment as we were told it was not part of the tour, but checking our write up, it was to be included. The view from the top was worth the effort but would have been nice to see the dome from the bottom
I can't recommend doing a small group tour for any attraction more!! SO WORTH IT! The tour guides are knowledgable, personable, and passionate about what they do and make you feel comfortable. I wish I could remember the tour guides name because she was excellent. The 400 steps climb to the top is breathtaking, and you get 2/3 breaks on the way to the top. I would do this tour again, maybe on a less hot day.
Don't even think about standing in line!
My husband and I loved this tour - our guide did a great job of explaining the history and art of the Duomo Dome. We enjoyed walking to the top and getting the great views. Nothing like Skip the Line tours when you see the hundreds of people lined up outside waiting to go in. This tour included the Duomo Museum and Baptistry, both were well worth visiting. Thank you!
The guide as great and tour was wonderful. Only negative was the info on meeting at the gathering spot could have been better
