Peking Opera is a form of Chinese opera originally from the 18th century which combines music, vocal performance, mime, dance and acrobatics. It arose in the late 18th century and started to be known in the West thanks to the awarded 1993 movie "Farewell My Concubine". The performers have elaborate and colorful costumes, and use the skills of speech, song, dance and combat in movements that are symbolic and suggestive, rather than realistic.

The Liyuan Theater has performed traditional Peking Opera since 1990 and it’s one of the leading opera venues in China. Located inside a hotel in Beijing, this theatre offers this wonderful 70 minutes performance whose plot can be followed with the help of English subtitles on lateral screens. The opera starts at 19:30 and finishes at 20:40 every day. If you arrive early, you will have the chance to see the performers getting their make up ready in the dressing room.

For Ticket Purchases Only: To obtain your entrance ticket, please go to the ticket office of the Liyuan Theatre and please tell them the full name you used to book to receive your entry tickets. Please arrive minimum 30 minutes before the show.
For Ticket Purchase + Roundtrip Transfer: Your driver will pick you up from your downtown Beijing hotel around 6:00 PM and 6:30 PM. You will be informed of the exact pick-up time by e-mail. To obtain your entrance ticket, please go to the ticket office of the Liyuan Theatre and please tell them the full name you used to book to receive your entry tickets. Please arrive minimum 30 minutes before the show.

We were picked up by Mr. Sen from our hotel and we arrived at the theatre 30 minutes before show time. Show was interesting. Colorful. Only thing is that its in Chinese (of course right?!) and there are subtitles on the side. Never seen something like it, worth check it out if you havent either. Thanks!

This experience wasn't quite what I had in mind. The venue caters to tourists - the place was empty with the exception of a few tour groups and you enter through a gift shop. The show itself wasn't something I found interesting, as it was slow moving. We were brought in early, waited, saw an hour-long show, and were brought back to our hotel. The transportation was nice, but I wouldn't repeat the experience.
